July 2026
ib vogt is pleased to announce that development approval has been granted for the Wagga North BESS project, a major milestone on the progression toward delivery and construction of the project.
About the approval
Consent was granted by the NSW Planning Secretary on 10 July 2026, approving construction of a 120 MW / 480 MWh Battery Energy Storage System at 116 and 118 Bavin Road, Bomen, together with ancillary infrastructure, connection to the Transgrid Wagga North Zone substation, an access road, an upgrade to the Byrnes/Bavin Road intersection, and sealing of Bavin Road.
The approval follows a comprehensive assessment process by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, including public exhibition of the application in February 2026 and consideration of submissions received from the community and government agencies.
Issues raised by the community during consultation and in submissions have been considered and adequately addressed through the provision of additional information, refinements to the development and the conditions of consent.
The proposal has an estimated development cost over $200 million dollars and would generate up to 80 construction jobs and 5 ongoing operational jobs. ib vogt has committed to a community benefit sharing payment of $1,948,908 in accordance with the Wagga Wagga Local Infrastructure Contributions Plan 2019-2034, a significant contribution to provide the Wagga Wagga community with infrastructure upgrades. The upfront contribution - paid once construction is completed - is almost double the recommended contribution in the NSW Benefit-Sharing Guideline for large-scale energy storage projects.
Next steps
With development approval secured, the project will now move into pre-construction planning, detailed design and procurement. Further updates on the construction timeline, workforce, and community engagement arrangements will be shared here as they are confirmed.
We thank the Wagga Wagga community for its engagement throughout the assessment process, and look forward to keeping residents informed as the project progresses.
The determination and associated documents are available on the NSW Planning Portal:
